What is Uttarakhand tunnel collapse Daksh, DRDO ROV carried out rescue operation

Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse: It has been more than a week since the tunnel accident in Uttarakhand. A rescue operation is being conducted to rescue 41 laborers trapped inside the tunnel in Uttarkashi district of the state. Silkyara in the district is the place where tunnel construction work was going on and due to the collapse of some part of it, 41 laborers got trapped inside it. A whole team of rescue workers is busy in taking them out.

At the same time, the robotics team of Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO) has deployed ‘Remotely Operated Vehicle’ (ROV). The name of this ROV is ‘Daksh’. Now people trapped in the tunnel will be helped through this ROV. This ROV is specially designed to be used on motorized pan-tilt platforms, which can help in reaching risky areas. Let us know more about this robotic vehicle.

What is ROV Daksh?

(Robotic Vehicle Daksh)

According to DRDO, Daksh is controlled from a distance, hence it is known as Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV). This is a vehicle which is used to detect and manage Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Apart from this, it is also used for survey at the site of nuclear or chemical accident. Many times dangerous objects are also handled through it.

Daksh has the ability to climb stairs and can work continuously for three hours. It can be easily operated within the range of 100 to 500 meters. Daksh is used by bomb disposal units (BDUs) of the army, police and paramilitary forces to deal with IEDs and other dangerous substances. ROV Daksh has a motorized pan-tilt platform and can be controlled remotely within a range of 500 meters.

The robotic vehicle is also equipped with an arm, which can lift a 20 kg dangerous object from a distance of 2.5 meters and a 9 kg object from a distance of 4 meters. Daksh also has the ability to climb stairs and work on slopes. The wheels fitted in the robotic vehicle are also capable of withstanding the effects of an explosion. When fully charged, it operates for three hours. Many devices like cameras, master control station, shotgun, IED handling tool are installed in it.
