Chhota Shakeel Case: Mumbai Police has registered an FIR against Riyaz Bhati, an alleged associate of fugitive criminal Chhota Shakeel, for threatening a witness from jail in the extortion case registered against him. A police officer gave this information on Monday. Bhati is lodged in a Mumbai jail in an extortion case, in which Shakeel’s relative Salim Fruit and five others are also accused. Mumbai Police had invoked provisions of the ‘Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act’ (MCOCA) in the case and all the accused are currently in judicial custody.
What is the allegation?
According to the fresh FIR lodged against Bhati by the Khar police here last week, a 43-year-old businessman alleged that a man named Rajesh Bajaj had asked him to give a statement in favor of Bhati in the court in the case registered against him at Versova police station. Had threatened. The businessman knew Bajaj for the last 10 years. A friend of the businessman had filed a case against Bhati at Versova police station in 2021. In August this year, Bajaj had threatened the businessman not to get involved with the Chhota Shakeel gang. According to the FIR, when the businessman was to appear in court on November 4 in the case registered with the Versova police, he received a call from Bhati in which Bhati asked him to tell the other (witnesses) not to file a complaint against him.
The businessman was surprised by this because he knew that Bhati was in jail. After this he asked his friend to record the conversation and put it on speaker mode on the phone. The officer said that after recording the conversation, the businessman contacted Khar police and lodged a complaint against Bhati, his son and Bajaj. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered against Bhati and others under sections 195A (intimidating a person to make a false statement), 506-2 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. The police officer said that the matter is being investigated.
